Project goals: 1.) Create convenient outdoor entertainment center near house, 2.) Leave large open lawn area in rear of yard.
-
(Before) A long rambling colonial provided the backdrop for a lively entertainment center on this one acre New England property.
-
The pool is slightly narrower than a conventional pool due to the septic setback. It was lengthened to accommodate the integral spa and large wet shelf lounge.
-
The dining room, kitchen and firepit area had to be delicately installed around the existing septic lines.
-
(In Progress) Existing storm drain had to be rerouted around the pool and reconnected to the town’s street drainage system.
-
Newly constructed retaining wall (in rear) creates a horizon screen and blocks the neighboring (downslope) driveway. Existing hemlock trees at the far end provide the upper screen while Witch Hazel below provides additional screening and an early seasonal pop of color.
-
Because bluestone can get hot, quartzite stone was used around the pool. To break up hard geometry, LA used curves throughout the design.
-
The family’s favorite cherry tree was re-located to the rear yard area where it could be viewed and enjoyed from the newly built firepit.
-
Seating walls were cleverly used to separate the different rooms or land uses. Here, the firepit area is enclosed with walls and axis openings. The walls then provide enclosure for the terrace’s huge sunning bed.
-
It was an exciting challenge to fit all of the elements together in a tight space, but the solution to the septic challenge resulted in a great open lawn.
-
Fieldstone walls (also designed on a curve) were constructed to match the existing masonry fireplace in the pool area and reflect the other curves in the hardscape.
-
Lady of the house has green thumb and created her own garden beds.
-
LA and homeowner worked together to find ways to integrate the existing plantings into the new landscape.
-
The kitchen boasts a modern flare with a custom concrete countertop and stainless appliances. Convenient herb garden behind grilling station and home’s kitchen provides an easy way to “spice up” recipes.
-
Colorful, sun tolerant perennials such as roses and hydrangea add to the fun and feel of this spectacular summer entertainment center.
