The park contains a just over an acre of Certified 419 Tifway Bermudagass. Being the foundation for the park, these areas receive a large amount of pedestrian traffic and are maintained through an intensive program of soil testing, fertilizations, aerations, verticuting, and mowing.
-
The native and perennial gardens require continual pruning and cleaning to maintain the natural but kept appearance of the landscape. Gas powered shears are prohibited in the maintenance of the park. This method of pruning requires the employment of highly skilled team members.
-
Our maintenance team is constantly maintaining the decomposed granite pathways by replenishing, grading, and compacting as needed throughout the year. For safety and aesthetic reasons the trees throughout these walking paths must also be monitored daily for low limbs that could impede the pedestrian traffic.
-
Built atop a bridge and among downtown sky scrapers, the park’s high winds present a challenge to keep all of the perennials looking their best. Constant vigilance in pruning ensures that the plants grow in a habit that can sustain these conditions.
-
The perennial gardens on the East side of the park offers sitting areas, ping pong, and foosball tables that present challenges with keeping the decomposed granite in the path and the perennials contained within their beds. This concentration of activities lends itself to potentially high occurrences of damage to the plant material that must be carefully pruned to promote rejuvenation.
-
With over 40 different species of shrubs, perennials, and grasses, a thorough knowledge of horticultural practices is required in order to correctly shape and prune each of these varieties. We are constantly training and honing these skills with each of our team members.
-
The grasses effectively create a soft natural boundary between the main walking path of the park and one of the outdoor activity areas. These native grasses are maintained by hand to provide clearance for pedestrians and visual uniformity.
-
The raised planter beds located two feet from the curb of the street offer up unique challenges with them being surrounded by hardscapes that radiate heat. Their location creates visual interest for vehicles passing by which requires a high level of detail.
-
Seasonal interest, in the form of annual color, is blended into the perennial beds. This compensates for the cyclical nature of the perennials requiring a focused attention to maintain the borders between annuals and perennials.
-
The park contains an upscale modern restaurant that adds to the visibility of the landscape. The landscape areas around the restaurant are located under rooflines requiring additional attention to the management of water. These beds and the adjacent areas of the park enhance the experience from the seating area of this glass-facade establishment.
-
The main park entrance showcases one of the interactive water features and donor wall accentuated with seasonal color. There is a high level of detail and interest that must be maintained in this area due to the attention it receives as each and every foundation donor seeks out their place on the wall.
-
This entrance to the park leads towards the Children’s Park, perennial gardens, and the seating area for the food trucks. The large open turf area hosts numerous types of events such soccer, lawn tennis, concerts, movie nights, yoga, and children’s activities all of which create compaction and management challenges. This is mowed twice per week with reel mowers and fertilized twice per month. We are allowed to rope off sections for only short periods of time to allow the turf grass to recover prior to the next event.
-
This area is the primary seating area for the food trucks that are at the park daily. This attracts large lunchtime crowds that are tough on the park with pedestrian traffic and litter. The grass and sage is continually pick pruned to maintain the natural appearance and heights. These plants provided a buffer for the visitors from the noise of the street just on the other side.
-
This area, as with much of the park, requires a high level of training to maintain the natural appearance. These areas are enjoyed as well as critiqued from the ground and the high rises above.
