The original walk led straight out to a narrow street that did not allow parking, so the walk orientation was changed to greet guest to an on-site parking area banding with pavers that related to the original bricks in the entry landing.
-
The original garage was converted to a study and the driveway was going to be moved to the other side of the house. The homeowners wanted to preserve the privacy that the trees created from the street, so the Design Team worked with the village to have the tree transplanted or replaced through their tree replacement program
-
The original brick landing was preserved while the remaining brick from the previous walk were designed and installed to create a cohesive relationship between old and new.
-
The walks were designed to allow for containers of colorful displays of seasonal flowers that help provide a vertical definition to the entry space.
-
The area once occupied by the driveway was converted into a bluestone chip viewing garden outside the new study. The area is shaped by a boxwood hedge that continues the horizontal flow established from the existing hedges at the doorway.
-
The grade change established from the previous driveway is simply transitioned with a bluestone step and paver curbing. Single trunked ornamental trees establish a symmetrical look to the landscape as well as creating a vertical rhythm that connects the formal entry space to the casual viewing garden.
-
This backyard area would soon become the new driveway which meant a large shade tree would have to be removed. Because of its size the village required an equal amount of caliper inches be replanted.
-
Since the new driveway was in close proximity to the neighbor’s house the require tree replacement inches were used to screen the homes using columnar Maples. Arborvitaes were designed and installed to create an evergreen screen from the driveway and patio space.
-
The patio space is original however Design Team enhanced with area with a masonry BBQ wall and the Installation Team installed bluestone stoops at the doorways. Also, a new walk had to be created that connected the service doors on the other side of the house to the new driveway.
-
The grade change created by the new driveway was anticipated, thinking that the Installation Team could feather grade the transition, but change was too drastic for the homeowner to accept, especially near the patio. So the Design Team needed to create a solution in the field that would satisfy the homeowner and grading plan.
-
In addition to the original stone step transition from patio to driveway, the Design Team used the remaining walk bricks to create a curb that retained the grade along the driveway and created a visual tie to the hardscape both the backyard and front yard.
-
One of the other challenges the Design Team had was to find a suitable match to the tumbled clay brick that was used in the existing patio and front walk. By using bluestone as a visual buffer, the concrete paver solution proved to be an excellent complement.
-
Through many challenges the Design and Installation Teams enjoyed bring the homeowner’s piecemeal ideas into a cohesive and charming landscape design.
