Our client had a few priorities when creating their space: Preserve their existing plant material that was there and historic, have instant impact with the plant material going in, and have plenty of spaces to entertain. We were tasked with installation and working with the design firm in charge of the design to make sure we could help our client achieve what they had envisioned.
-
With the client wanting to have instant impact, filling out all the areas that were spotlights was a must. By mixing a variety of materials including annuals, perennials, grasses, and flowering shrubs, instant impact was achieved and then some! Picking plant material that would not only be aesthetically pleasing but work in a container or beds was also part of the plan to have consistency between areas of the house.

Drainage was constantly on our mind during this project. The soil was primarily clay so making soil amendments and creating drainage was vital to helping the landscape thrive for a long time. We made sure to add in drainage pipes where we could as well as grading to get the water out of the property.
-
The pool on the property was already existing when we were contracted to start on the project. Planning to work around it so damage was as limited as possible was easily taken care of by planning with our crews, project managers, and other contractors on site.
-
The landscape had numerous trees, boulders, and other material already existing on site. Some of the material was very old and sentimental to the homeowners. To help protect what we could, we made sure to use construction pathways to minimize disruption on the surface and to the root systems.
-
With the larger plant material protected and thriving, we were able to blend in the new material with the older material and have it look like they were installed at the same time. Making sure that the new material was lush, full, and vibrant helped achieve a “lived in” look.
-
Creating spaces with pops of color, hardscapes, and containers help easily draw your eyes away from more distracting parts of a landscape like lighting and irrigation lines. Those mature trees also created lots of microclimates, and picking plant material that would do well in multiple climates was a priority.
-
When starting the process of planning out installation, creating different spaces for entertaining was a high priority. The project already had a good perimeter to help start those spaces with existing trees, boulders, as well as the natural curve of the property line.
-
Each “room” that was installed was thoroughly thought through by our team and the homeowners to ensure that they all served a purpose. Walkways to seating that then opened up to a larger area so more people could congregate, making sure to have function as well as aesthetics, all lead to a successful installation and a happy client.
-
Creating clean lines, layers, and pops of different color all lead to a beautiful snapshot wherever you look. Starting with a ground cover around the outside of the bed provides a picture frame for the more colorful plant material and also makes the flowering material look even more pronounced with the layers surrounding it.
-
Wanting to see the beauty of the mountains surrounding the home was a complex situation. With this being a home with existing materials and trees, things were grown in and already private. We worked with the homeowners to create natural windows that showed the stunning views as well as kept their home and family secluded.
-
We worked with our crews to help create a garden that was not just used for entertainment during the day but also the night. By putting in lighting in strategic places we were able to highlight the stunning layers, lines, and color that were naturally in the garden to show how versatile their spaces actually are.
