The Design Team used broad and simple curves that pulled the bluestone walk along the driveway to the public walk. This also helped shape the lawn area into a visual element that helped tie the landscape elements together.
-
Irregular shaped flagstone was inserted in key area of the walk that not only related visually to the exposed flagstone on the house but created a nice contrast to the linear bluestone. These flagstone nodes were also designed to show case the homeowners flower pots
-
The Installation Team found the center point of the curved walk and from that cut each piece of bluestone on a radius. This gave the walk a flowing appearance that would relate to the water feature in the backyard.
-
It was noted that many extended family member would use the back entrance more than the front. So the Design Team included a curved walk and stone wall that helped direct people to the back living space as well as enforce the house details
-
Before any construction could begin the Design Team had to overcome a puzzling HOA code that protected these leaning trees. After the Design Team stated a case with the HOA and village officials that the trees not only impeded the building envelope but were also unsafe, permission was granted and construction started
-
Once the leaning and unsafe trees were removed the Design Team designed a paver patio space that embraced the surviving trees and created a shady retreat for the homeowners
-
The Design Team not only designed a tranquil patio space but highlighted it with a meandering stream.
-
The Design Team placed the stream's source near the patio so that it could be visually enjoyed. But the gentle sound of the flowing water also creates a tranquil haven that the homeowners enjoy.
-
The stream takes advantage of the drastic grade change created by the contrived basement windows. The Design Team orientated the falls so that they could be viewed from the basement windows and heard from the upper floor bedroom
-
Visually the stream is one long run, but to minimize water evaporation and pump sizes, two separate streams were designed. The Design Team worked with the home builder to ensure that there would be adequate storm water drainage in the event of a heavy rain.
-
To transition the grade change from the patio the Design Team created broad curving masonry steps that mimicked the waterfalls. These broad landings also allowed anyone to access the stream's garden.
-
The Design Team wanted the stream to be enjoyed from many different areas, so gravel seating areas were incorporated. Boulders were also strategically placed to allow grandchildren to interact with the stream.
-
Through careful and respectful communication with the homeowners, builder, and village officials many obstacles were overcome to achieve a home site that will be enjoyed for a long time.
