(Before) The large-scale house and off-center pool were separated by distance and grade causing a discombobulated outdoor space. The task at hand was to connect the new structures to the existing elements in a cohesive manner.
-
Keeping the symmetry of the backyard visually in tact, the designer balanced the new features (outdoor room and pool area) on either side of the house by utilizing grade and sight lines so children stay in view at all times.
-
The designer utlilized stone and timber materials that complimented the existing materials. For example 1) the fireplace and kitchen surround base, 2) posts on the pergola and porch. This design strategy made the new hardscape elements look original – not added-on – and maintained the symmetry of the house.
-
A new kitchen/grilling area was added onto the porch…

… as well as a dining space under a shade pergola providing open views from the house.
-
(Progress) Thermal Blue Stone was chosen for uniform color. Large 2 ft x 4 ft slabs were placed for greater durability to withstand excessive weight and harsh weather conditions.
-
(Progress) Designer used a tight mesh 3 foot high fence. Then camouflaged it with privet hedging.
-
The fence inside the privet was connected to the existing stone wall border on 2 sides. This unique solution preserves an open space yet still complies with pool code.
-
Every family member is highly allergic to bee stings.
-
To limit their exposure, the designer introduced a textured palette of blue, white and purple using thoughtful placement and artistic design. Plantings include arborvitae, balloon flower, boxwood, Kousa dogwood, Nepeta and Norway spruce. In addition, all plantings were chosen for their low maintenance qualities.
-
Known for it’s vibrant color and durability, Clematis was specifically chosen for placement along the split rail fence – a high traffic area where the family is constantly coming and going.
-
Night lighting illuminates colorful plantings around the property (like this salvia) without attracting bees returning to the hive after a hard day’s work.
-
The homeowners take delight in their worry-free backyard: • Safe from bees • Safe place for children to swim and play • Safe from stressful landscape maintenance responsibility

A stately mansion with a wraparound porch is the basis for a full entertainment center on this 2 acre site. Property grades were manipulated to maximize the pool area and outdoor room with fireplace (top right) while controlling views and increasing privacy.
