This client's wishlist included a freeform pond-like pool to swim laps, a spa to relax in, a firepit area to entertain guests, and various sunning terraces for tanning.
-
(BEFORE) From the hill overlooking the house, the slope needed to be graded, ledge hammered, and wetlands protected.
-
Due to proximity to wetlands, this design introduced grading, walls, and native buffer plantings along the wetlands border.
-
(BEFORE) The only access to the backyard from the house originally was through the garage or the back door (next to the garage, both just out of sight at the far left). Client asked to have a new access point that would allow them to easily transition from their home to their backyard oasis.
-
(IN PROGRESS) Plans were drafted to create a new back door on the house, with stone walkway leading to the pool environment.
-
The new back door opens to a small "coffee" patio where the homeowners enjoy their morning newspaper before migrating to the pool area.
-
(BEFORE) The client requested to keep the existing shed structure, which serves as a great focal point for before and after comparisons. Here, the shed overlooks the site of the future pool.
-
The space surrounding the trusty shed is barely recognizable after hammering ledge, grading, excavation, and construction is complete!
-
(IN PROGRESS) Client requested a freeform pool where they could swim laps. During construction, groundwater was a challenge but the crews were able to continuously pump it until the area was sealed.
-
(IN PROGRESS) An outdoor shower was added to the rear of the existing shed to allow for a quick rinse without having to traipse back into the house.
-
The use of natural stone is prominent throughout this design, like in this waterfall feature from spa to pool. The sound of the cascading water adds to the overall ambiance of the environment.
-
Various perennials, ornamental grasses, River Birch, and other plantings were selected for their seasonal colors.
-
There is a nice transition of blooming colors from spring into summer and summer into autumn.
-
The elevated entertaining area features a gas-powered firepit which gives off a realistic flame, which was an important component to the client.
-
The final design hit all the right marks for this client. They asked for a natural-feeling oasis to escape from their hectic lives in the city. Their weekend home is now the ultimate escape, complete with subtle lighting features and an outdoor audio system. They are also planning a dining terrace for a later phase!
