The Prairie is a comprehensive, large-scale conservation effort that restores biodiversity, protects the core health of the ecosystem, and lets nature do its thing. By repairing the degraded land, plants, wildlife, pollinators and natural processes are allowed to flourish.
-
Arial satellite photos show the scope of the project best. 4 acres of previously irrigated and maintained turfgrass lies to the north (top of photo) while 10 acres previously home to unoccupied office buildings and parking is situated south (bottom of photo).
-
Completed in partnership with the demolition contractor, the 10-acre site required grading and clean up before any further work could be done restoring the property.
-
Once the site was prepared, topsoil was brought in over the top. To ensure dirt was spread evenly, the site was sectioned off into a grid formation with wooden stakes. Using the height of the stakes, our team was able to ensure that 3 inches of topsoil was brought in over each designated grid.
-
The solar powered irrigation system’s main line was rerouted to avoid the prairie area where previously it serviced beds and turf surrounding office buildings.
-
In its first spring and summer the prairie flowers successfully bloomed offering an array of color to space that was previously coated by concrete.
-
The seed mix, perennials, and cover crop make for a beautiful combination of colors situated near a parking garage, allowing employees to enjoy nature on their walk into the office.
-
Walking near the prairie, passersby can hear the chirps of insects and see pollinators enjoying the mature prairie flowers.
-
In the heart of a corporate office campus visitors are greeted with a restored burst of color, reminding them of the beauty found in natural, native landscaping.
-
Where was once multiple buildings and parking lots now lays an ecologically sustainable landscape providing a great view from office windows and a new habitat for insects.
