The backyard landscape is flat in order to maximize hosting events, while striking a balance of utilizing smaller spaces for more intimate gathering areas. The overall design intent is formal near the house, and transitions into native scenery at a distance.
-
The vibrant colors of annuals and perennials harmonize with the surrounding landscape. This area presented a unique challenge as we had to create distinct layers by transitioning from the informal elements at the perimeter to the formal elements, including structured lines, edges, and hedges.
-
Grass pathways and sharp lines demarcate the planting beds from the turf, creating a distinct visual separation. Vines adorning the walls evoke a French ambiance. The installation of numerous large specimen trees required meticulous strategic coordination. Due to the considerable size of the plant material and the limited access to the property, careful planning was essential to successfully execute the design.
-
Existing boulders found onsite were integrated into the landscape to achieve flow with the surrounding area. The grass pathways throughout the property contrast with the hardscape, softening the overall aesthetic and experience. All plant material was intentionally selected and sourced to achieve balance with the formal and existing natural elements surrounding the exterior.
-
This garden makes functional use of the surrounding space. Visitors can learn how to grow their own vegetation accompanied by the sound of a custom stone water feature, which also serves as a stark textural contrast between materials.
-
In the foreground, preparations for the perennial garden and surrounding crusher fine paths are visible. It was essential to ensure that the edging complemented the home's overall architecture and that the client had pathways for walking the property and accessing the garden. Most importantly, the construction of this garden frames the motor court pictured in the background, creating a striking focal point.
-
The boxwoods and raised paver edges near the interior strike a balance between providing ample structure without limiting the visibility of other areas of the property. White and purple blooming perennials pull inspiration from the scenic mountain backdrop, fostering a sense of harmony and peace.

At the center of the photo stands the largest Colorado Blue Spruce our company has planted. Standing 40 feet tall and affectionately nicknamed "Big Mama", sourced from Idaho, the acquisition of Big Mama required special permits. The installation process was no small feat; with a 90-inch root ball, the use of a hydraulic spade machine was essential for installation.
-
The landscape design is meticulously centered around the core focus of privacy. A curved gate at the front of the property was designed to integrate seamlessly with the adjacent wall and the paver edging of the driveway path. Native plant materials, such as spruce trees, native seeds, large evergreens, and wildflowers, enhance the natural beauty of the surroundings and harmonize with the local environment.
-
The client's residence is nestled a quarter mile into the property, gradually becoming visible as you enter the driveway. To create a striking first impression, a single entry point was designed. Large, hand-selected specimen trees border the property, offering seclusion and tranquility. To ensure their stability against the area's prevalent winds, the trees were staked with cords positioned two-thirds up their height.
-
The curved driveway serves as the sole access point to the property, presenting a significant challenge in staging and locating plant materials across multiple phases. We implemented a strategic plan to ensure the continuous vitality of the plant material over the two-year project duration. To maximize efficiency, we utilized smaller equipment and increased the frequency of trips.
-
This natural pathway at the back of the property leads to a large grassy exterior, ideal for hosting gatherings or spending quality time with friends and family. A perennial garden in the foreground adds color and accentuates the walkway. The large spruce trees pictured in the background blend together and provide continuity with existing trees from the surrounding area.

This extensive two-year project encompassed numerous details, but we were fortunate to leverage an exceptional crew. Our client was highly accommodating and communicative, the designer remained onsite with us throughout the project, communication with subcontractors was straightforward, and our team consistently dedicated effort to procuring all necessary materials.
