Credit One Stadium is a tennis stadium located on Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina. With its redesign in 2021, the site was transformed into a world-class venue that elevates the experiences of athletes, performers and patrons alike.
-
The main entry plaza of the stadium has a combination of mulch beds adjacent to crushed tabby oystershell, used as an ecofriendly walking path. Crews hand rake the mulch and shells to keep them looking fresh and ensure separation between the two and install new material right before the tournament.
-
The plaza contains several hundred shrubs. The yew plum pines in the foreground are pruned by hand, while the privet hedgerow in the background is trimmed using gas powered trimmers and is kept in check using growth regulator. In total, crews spend 20% of their time maintaining the site’s shrubs.
-
With over 13 acres of turf on the site, there is a robust turf care program which includes three plus fertilizations, aeration and overseeding annually. We also use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to combat weeds, pests, and pathogens.
-
This site blends expanses of turf, sitting areas, and walkways with complimentary punctuations of vivid annuals, bountiful perennials, formal hedges and a shaded tree canopy—all of which aid in creating memories and encouraging fun.
-
Designed with an eye to creating tranquility, the site has several water features including the fountain seen here in the entrance plaza.
-
The site’s fountains are inspected and cleaned monthly. Site personnel checks water levels, the filtration system, and the intake screens and skimmers to keep them free of debris.
-
The palm trees seen here are an enhancement we performed to help blend the stadium with the surrounding landscape—adding a pop of color against the stadium beams. To maintain them, we remove their fruits and hanging fronds and fertilize as needed.
-
This enhancement was in response to our customer wanting a small bed that resembled a tennis ball—which we created using Spiderwort, Dusty miller and Duranta.
-
Over the years, 260 planters have been installed to add visual appeal, enhance aesthetics and guide visitors. These moveable planters are hand watered for several weeks and 90% of them are dismantled at the tournament’s conclusion, requiring removal of plants, soil and drainage rocks and cleaning them for storage.
-
Over 1000 bales of pine straw are installed throughout the site. Pine straw is widely used as mulch in the Southeast due to its availability and soil enriching qualities, helping to acidify the soil as it breaks down which benefits plants and allows for proper nutrient uptake.
-
In bed areas that were prone to washout during heavy rains, we redesigned bedspace to include river rock and used dyed cypress mulch, which is less likely to migrate when it rains. In total, we installed just over 300 CY of hardwood mulch annually.
-
Caring the for the site’s 150 established trees is an integral part of the site’s maintenance plan. Site personnel continuously monitor for signs of pests and disease, prune dead and dying branches regularly and perform deep root fertilization when necessary.
-
Landscape personnel pay close attention to the detail work including blowing and edging nearly 3.5 miles of curb line and walkways weekly. Crews must also be on top of pruning, shearing, cutbacks, and deadheading to keep hedgerows trimmed and walkways cleared.
-
With the very warm climate in this Lowcountry area, crews constantly monitor materials for insect infestations, treating affected plant material when issues are discovered.
-
Providing a consistently high standard of maintenance in this landscape is challenging. But with strong communication between all parties and an eye to detail, Credit One Stadium provides an elevated attendee experience for all who visit.
