Envisioned as a “sculpture terrace” to reflect the outdoor needs of two aesthete retirees, an underutilized concrete rooftop was transformed into a series of conversation spaces, raised planting beds and pathways to curate the viewing of various sculptures.

Aerial view of completed renovation. Geometric massings approximate the artistic style of Piet Mondrian while replacing blocks of color with rich materials and textures and introducing the element of verticality

A series of conversation spaces are denoted by IPE wood tiles. The site furnishings were salvaged from the owners previous residence which reinforced the connection with their previous sculpture garden.

Narrow swathes of Mexican pebbles define areas of inaccessibility and frame a linear path of porcelain tile which connects the various conversation spaces

A linear path of porcelain tile connects various conversation spaces and creates a curated view of the sculpture at its terminus.

Aerial view of completed terrace renovation. While plant material to screen the unfinished roof were preferred along the large planting bed which runs the entire length of the terrace, building management would not allow any work to occur here.
