Construction of the heated path leading to the client's primary access door begins. A dedicated boiler was installed to handle the added system load.
-
Construction of the chicken yard is in progress. All plants were planted in 12" of gravel to allow the chickens to scratch without disturbing soils. Drought tolerant, deep-rooted plants were used within the chicken yard.
-
A panoramic view of the client's private parking space. This is their view when they arrive at the property.
-
Construction of the retaining walls created three terraces stepping down the hillside. The uppermost terrace will contain the chicken yard and coop.
-
A blend of four different types of boulders were hand selected to create the terracing. The barn and adjacent custom-designed chicken coop are seen at the top of the terrace. A turf slope connects the house to the nearby croquet lawn.
-
The existing barn was left in place but we worked with the architect to adjust the arch and ceiling heights to create a covered pedestrian corridor leading to the heated walkway. White oak fencing is used throughout the project.
-
Over 950 plants were added to this front meadow planting. We used larger sizes at the client's request for a more immediate impact.
-
The broad entry porch provides views back to the prairie. Gas lanterns were also added to the porch.
-
Construction of the water feature after the main welding project was completed. The steel rill will run down the slope and be incorporated into the stone work.
-
At the top of the turf slope sites a reclaimed sugar pot used as the source for the custom designed steel rill that is on top of the stone wall. Large stones are placed in the basin allowing users to cross over the water.
-
A view of the water feature looking back toward the upper terrace with the chicken yard and barn.
-
The arced stone steps create access to all three terraced levels. The railings were hand-forged by a local craftsperson.

A sunrise view from this terrace shows the native plantings surrounded by a bluestone terrace.
-
A sunrise view across the property shows the protected wetland in the distance. The croquet lawn is on the left of the photo. A vegetative buffer of native plants is placed between the landscaped spaces and the natural wetland.
