Originally completed in July 2011, the Scioto Mile Fountain remains an iconic centerpiece of the Scioto Mile. Named one of the 15 best fountains in the world by CNN in 2014, it faced maintenance issues and was shut down in 2021. A total rebuild began in May 2023, leading to a grand reopening in May 2024. Enhancements in the $15 million rebuild include new lighting, water features, and increased seating and shade areas. As the installers of the original, we were contacted for the rework which included pavers, granite curb, irrigation, new trees, perennials, soils, decomposed granite, and turf.
-
To get the fountain back open in time to meet the strict Memorial Day deadline, it was necessary to cover the main fountain area to work throughout the winter.
-
The pavers of the fountain were cut and fabricated overseas. Due to the unique sizing, elliptical pattern, and tight tolerances, the paver structure needed to be constructed and measured to ensure a perfect fit before being shipped.
-
Working under the tent presented a significant challenge as we had to coordinate with several other trades working simultaneously. Additionally, aligning the pavers on the pedestals, along with ensuring the proper placement of plumbing and electrical elements, added to the complexity of the task.
-
The image gives a better look at the pedestal structure underneath the pavers. In total, the elliptical and circular paver areas used 3105 SF of Granite pavers on pedestals and 2000 Custom Stainless-Steel Brackets.
-
This image shows the plumbing and electrical elements that needed to be aligned with the pavers.
-
Thirty 5” trees were installed in the areas around the fountain.
-
These new trees will create welcome shade during hot summer days. Forty custom pieces of site furnishings, like these red lounge chairs, were also installed.
-
165 shrubs and 704 perennials were installed following the precise lines of the design.
-
40 cubic yards of mulch were added to complete the look of these large beds.
-
In total, we installed 2,000 cubic yards of soil and 24,000 square feet of sod.
-
The site features a Smart Rainbird 2 wire irrigation system that covers over 2 acres
-
Additionally, irrigation needed to be run to each of the large trees in the picnic area.
-
This picnic area features seven 21ft Emerald Avenue Hornbeams that will provide shade without overgrowing, along with 123 tons of compacted base material topped with 80 tons of decorative decomposed granite.
-
In addition to the large elliptical paver structure, we also installed a smaller circular structure, following the same process but on a smaller scale.
-
We are proud of the work we completed at this site, which holds significant importance to the Columbus community. Despite working under strict deadlines and the increased pressure of public expectations, we are thrilled with our accomplishments. It's great to see the community of Columbus enjoy this beautiful park.
